Contractors are Licensed by the Contractors Licensing Board of California. There are appropriately 45 Contractor categories. A Contractor must have a license for each category that they perform a service for. For example, Plumber C-36, HVAC C-20 Painter C-33, Electrician C-10, etc.

Beware of Contractors that say their Contractor's License covers work that is not specific to their license. For example: A Painting Contractor cannot claim that they can perform Electrical work without an Electrical Contractor's License. They must also have an Electrical Contractor's license.

Contractors must carry proof of Liability Insurance and Workman's Comp Insurance (No Workman's Comp Insurance is required if they do their own work and do not have Employees). Contractor that use the service of Subcontractors, the Subcontractors must also have a Contractors License and proper Insurance(s).
